Here it is - my second blog of the year and it's going to be a quick one. I have been swamped with work with the restoration project and my Painting workshops I am teaching but I was able to finally finish a portrait I have been working on for about a year and I have found some time to continue my work on the "Filtered" series.

The portrait is a piece I started a few years ago but I always felt that it lacked something I just wasn't sure what it was. But after starting the pixel pieces it hit me "that's where it needed to go" I remember thinking and after that it just took off. Working on this portrait actually inspired to start another piece that is in process now, which is taking it's own form and that's what I really love about the creative process, it takes me to so many different places and now I am finding it a bit easier to follow where ever it may take me. it may seem at times that a lot of my work doesn't relate to each other but I know when I look at these works that they all have a connection.

Okay so now I'm going to finish up in my studio and wait for the snowstorm also coming soon look for exclusive interviews from my fellow citizens on the Arts and Culture and how they relate to them.

It's the start of a new week and a new year so I have decided that this is the year that I share my insights as a Artist living and working on the south side of Chicago with all of you on a weekly basis.

So here it goes, I am not in a habit of sharing my political views on this blog but the incidents of this past weekend have made me realize how much more work we have to do as a society. My condolences go out to all the victims from the arizona shootings and my wishes for the safe
recovery of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and all the victims that are in recovery.

Now for all the goings on in the studio. After a successful fall exhibit season I have cleaned up the studio for the new year and am getting ready for new works. The blocks are piling up in the studio and with my latest project the restoration of The Providence of God Church going very well, I will lots to share with you all this year!

I also wanted to share this project I was asked to collaborate with, with you all. Its called SCVNGR Hunt en Tu Ciudad sounds like a great idea and maybe it'll stir up some interest in a little something that we all could use, culture it's run by Remezcla

Okay so it's been a long weekend for me after teaching 91 kids on Saturday we checked out Rana Santacruz at the Mayne theater I have to admit that I've never heard of this guy before but I was impressed it was a great concert! very different and afterward got a chance to talk to him and I was very impressed with the creative spirit.

So with this said I ask you all to think about what your role is in our society and how can we strengthen this great country we live, work and create in.

I'm back and asking the age old question "if a Mexicano/a falls on the border and no one sees him/her do they really…" The fact of the matter is that after attending a really great lecture at the SAIC where a couple of friends where speaking at I realized that as much potential that the Mexican community has here in Chicago between the cultural aspects and the sheer buying power for some reason the Mexican/American community is basically invisible. Well as much as I would like to get on my soap box and lecture for days about this situation I'm going to leave it at that if any one has anything to add to that feel free to write.

Now back to the purpose of this post, to keep you all updated an what's going on with my work in the studio. I have kind of paralyzed with all kinds of concerns at the studio most of which is financial. Work is slowly starting to come back and my painting continues to go on a very adventurous path I am in the process of trying to sell off earlier works to make space and raise funds for the studio. My group at Community Links H.S. is frustrating me as much as anything right now it seems that all these kids that "want" to learn to paint have all of a sudden become soccer "stars" or would rather play dodge ball. Huh! I mean I really like the group and I know they're young H.S. kids but as someone who values time more than anything it is very frustrating.

And there it is is the true purpose of this blog and to my knowledge all blogs, my complaint box so thanks for listening and I look forward to any responses.

Oh and just to let you all know I am getting ready for a solo exhibit at Chicago State University in September so hopefully I will still be able to maintain my studio so I can get work out for that.

Here we are on the holiest of holy days in American society, yes super bowl Sunday. So good luck to all participants and I'm going to try eat as much healthy junk food as I can without making it a "super bowl" of my own.

So have fun and I really hope that if the Saints win they march into NOLA and make it a better place for everyone that resides in NOLA whether it's the "quarters" or the "lower 9th".

Well I have to wish you all a very happy new year and hope that you have an incredible 2010, before I get distracted…again.

I can't believe it's been over a year since we were sitting on that airplane leaving "la cuidad de la esperanza" and realized there was smoke coming into the cabin as we hear "ladies and gentleman as you might have noticed…" then quick motion of the airplane turning left. What followed was the longest 7 minutes of my life.

Well that was our introduction to 2009 and now it's gone but not forgotten the year brought some great things, an incredible solo exhibit at Latino Arts, Inc. Milwaukee, great times with good friends and family, meeting new friends and all the rest of the trimmings!

Now it's time to look at present, with 2010 to look forward to lot's of creating in the studio and sharing all this again with the people on my life.

As I was sitting at my computer last week I noticed a email message facebook from someone that I thought would be a good friend who at last joined the modern world of facebook, what followed to my dismay was this:

Hi Everyone, Apparently, someone named Luis De La Torre is contacting my friends, especially those who live in Los Angeles, and asking to be Facebook “friends” because he is a friend of mine. He is NOT a friend of mine! He is a local Chicago D-list painter who tries to attach himself to people in the arts he can get favors or information from. He has already succeeded in "friending" some people I know on FB. Who you choose to be friends with on FB is up to you, but if you are contacted by this guy and he wants to be friends with you because you and he have "mutual" friends___like me, I would ignore it! If I were you, I would also "block" him through the security setting so that he cannot see YOUR friends. Sorry this has happened. If you have any questions, please contact me. Judithe Hernandez

Yes you can imagine my horror, this is just completely off the wall!

For the past years I have prided myself for going out of my way to help the people around me, whether it's letting them use my studio to work in, or getting them into galleries or introducing them to people that would support them by purchasing there work or set up exhibits for them. I even have given people materials to work with and shown them how to use the material.

And now this, well I didn't really feel that I needed to respond to this person because my track record speaks for itself and to tell you the truth I was kinda entertained with this since after I received this I was added to several people's FB friends list in LA, so I just let it slide.

But after showing this letter to a couple of trusted people around me and seeing there reaction of utter disgust I really felt the culprit had to have some kind of illness I mean why would a person who until a couple of months ago called herself a friend of mine, and that I even helped hang her work. Why would this person send out such a vile letter, then I remembered the advice of a friend when he told me " most artists are backstabbers, so watch your back you can't be honest with Artists" thank you C.T. I have learned from you maybe late but I have learned.

With that said Happy New year to you Post- Racial America I'm glad that we can all get along!
even if we can't get along within our own race or political parties or building!

The Nature of Nature.

Yep it's been a while since I've posted a new blog and I'm feeling quite ashamed, well not really but what can I say writing is not my forte.

There has been much going on around here my solo exhibit at Latino Art's Inc. has come and gone, it was worth while if you had a chance to see the exhibit thank you and please feel free to let me know what you thought. 27 new pieces including 5 - 6'X9" canvases almost a whole year of work for this exhibit and it was awesome I received some really great feedback and hopefully some the work will find a home.

Well that's about it for now I'm off to paint, I'll try and get more consistent with blog but as always - have fun out there!

Oh and for those of you who are interested I will be having an impromptu exhibit at the studio so stay tuned.

CONGRATULATION SUMMER YOU'VE MADE IT

Well now here it is the season we've all been waiting for, summer better known as "construction" in Chicago. Once again I find myself posting a long overdue blog and in my studio which at 6:50am was 97º, Yes I am very grateful for the heat of summer so I won't complain about it.

Work in the studio is going slower than planned but I do feel that the work will be ready for August and it will be a very telling exhibit in September. Now I have to start figuring out what needs to be done with everything past this Fall, I am trying to get work out there to be exhibited. Either I will start having once a month gatherings at the studio or ship the work wherever it needs to go. I would like to write a little about the evolution of my new work because it helps me to put it in place in my own thoughts. One of the things I am slowly learning from my mentor, Carlos Estrada-Vega is that thinking too much about what your working on stops you from doing it. Progressing into the work, changing it is being affirmed that this approach is affective. It's a lot easier now for me to approach the work and not be stymied by constant barrage of inner questions just get the work out and it speaks for its self.

A big part of my work has been driven by a constant desire to master the materials I work with be it water color, oil paint or fresco and it's interesting taking a look back how much this yearning has made me a kind of slave to this materialism. I look around my studio and I see a never ending source of inspiration people always wonder why I can't leave my studio, it's not that I'm obsessive. it's really that I'm like kid in a candy store and believe me I appreciate everything that the gods of the universe has provided for me so 97º or 57º waterfall or no water in the bathrooms I will always be happy to spend time in my studio where ever it is.

SPRING TIME HIT THE SNOOZE BUTTON-AGAIN

Like the godfather "just when you think your out they suck you right back in". And here we are already its May the beautiful Chicago spring weather has soured as usual but life carries on and of course every thing needs to get done.

You know lately people have been asking me "Luis how do you get all this done?" well let me give you a glimpse into my schedule here it goes.

10:45 wake up hit the snooze (on the cell phone because of course we don't have an alarm clock)
10:45-11:05 - scratch various body parts.
11:06-11:13 (depending on the weather) look at the piles of cloth all around.
11:15-11:30 (there's always a few minutes missing, who knows where they go if any one can tell me please do) I forgot what goes on during this time frame.
11:31-11:45 - Eat my world famous breakfast it used to be bagels but my gut has rebelled and now its usually cereal and a banana.
12:00-12:15-12:35 - walk to the studio it'll take about 15 minutes but in the "spring " I get caught up watching the robins .
12:37-1:03 - ahh the good stuff lunch all the scratching and robin watching has got me hungry.
1:07-1:49 - listen to certain neighbors bitch about various problems and or all their "success"
2:00-3:00 - the stuff you all been waiting ...look at the work in front of me and ponder-what have I done!
3:00-3:31 - Knapp time -don't bother me
3:37-5:00 - get my ass up and do every thing I can to procrastinate .
4:32 - relative calls shouts "are you ready to rock"
4:39- clean up and get stuff ready for more procrastination tomorrow
5:00-6:00 lift heavy weights until I feel my "tripas" sliding down.
6:03-6:17 - argue with bally's personal trainer about why I can't use the heavy bag.
6:19 - watch as bally's personal trainer cries and takes his heavy bag home.
6:21 - baffled at all the conflict.
6:37-6:39 - shower (quickly cause I had my hair just right)
8:00-9:00- novela
9:01-9:43 - check emails and debate weather or not to open up that "European lottery" cause I may have won 3 million euro's
10:03-12:47 - play "Hearts of Iron " a game of world domination.
1:05am - open the "European Lottery" email and type in my SS#.
1:07am - wait for a response .
1:23am - frustrated with no response from "european lottery" I play more "Hearts of Iron" cause I've almost conquered britain.
3:39am- check for any response from lottery.
3:41am- DP gets up to drag me to sleep (by the ear) as I throw a "barinche"
3:47- lay in bed and think about ways I can finally defeat the imperialist pigs we knows as AIG
4:03 - roll over
7:30 - wake up and do it all over again.

Well thats how it all gets done. So come by to the studio this weekend and check out the end result of all this "dismadre" see you all soon.

LOVE IN THE TIME OF "SWINE FLU"

Well here we go again the Swine flu has hit and I can see what's coming I'm not going to say it but we all know what's coming. I guess I should have never eaten that ham sandwich but I was really hungry and when your really hungry you do what you have to do to survive.

The thing is you see something that can sustain you even if it is temporary and your not really convinced that it's the best thing for you well... what are your options. Its not like some one was offering the steak and potato's that they wave around in your face. What I do know about Mexicano's is that we make the best of what we have and thrive doing so. In my case I am very grateful for what I do have and I know one day I will have my "steak" and maybe some potato's.

Well now I am going to continue to create my works and I hope all of you will continue to flourish.

HAPPY EARTH DAY TO YOU!

As I drive around in my 1970's Dina "olimpico" bus belching blue diesel fumes and enjoying some Pedro Infante and Tampico cumbia I think to my self ...wow what a wonderful world (then I flush the toilet right on to the street). Yes its that time again. its "earth day" the one day of the year people stop dumping garbage because its the right thing to do.

Not that I'm against building a society full of wall street big wigs or pollution spewing factories - hey I'm not even opposed to china building ten coal burning plants a day as long as we have one day a year we all can shut the lights off to save energy we'll be fine.

Okay thats done, lots of things have happened in the last month its great to be back to work at the studio and I feel good about the work I'm producing right now. I am also very grateful to the powers that be for every thing I have been able to accomplish during my time here in Chicago I know that I will continue with my work where ever I end up and thats a great feeling.

So now that I'm trying get myself in a better position and make my move and establish myself in another local I'm looking to lighten my load and raise funds for the move and so if any one out there is interested in works I have in the studio please let me know I'm sure we can work some thing out.

The Box

The life of a box must be one of the most tragic existences around. First you get filled up with what ever nonsense they feel like filling you up with - then you get stacked or as in the case with my box you get shipped off somewhere. Sure its flattering having money spent on you but then off you go to your destination after all this you get delivered(hopefully). In the case of my box the post man decided for some unknown reason takes the box back with him to the El Paso office and after almost four weeks and a repackaging that didn't look so gentle it arrives to the destination and then you get thrown away.

Other than that things are going very well in Las Cruces its aways very sunny here and I have been working on a portrait of Carlos kind of as a thanks for him having me in his house and mentoring me through some kind of difficult things .

Now I am going to work on as much as painting as possible.

Alright I'm starting to understand why without understanding why, I know that does'nt make much sense but it is what it is. not that my work is going to go completely non-objective because lets face it people will all have a different take on it maybe that is the objective.

Last night I did some research on "figurative painters" and just opening up a google image page all you see is the same thing of course some are better than others and all probably very beautiful and I would never deny that they think there'll pushing themselves as artist. To me this formula has already been discovered and proven, not that I'm thinking about it.

Time

I am sitting in Las Cruces, NM enjoying the sun at the moment. After an uneventful flight (which I am very happy for) and a border foray that I'll explain later I met up with Carlos Estrada-Vega. We talked and went around checking out his current architectural projects Then I crashed just like I always do at about 2 am. I woke up this morning at about 5 am (my time on the telephone is all messed up), my camera that just would not work all of yesterday, I tried it this morning and just like that it works like charm.

As I'm sitting here in Cafe "Milagros" I recieved some very bad news, My friend - and really every ones friend Pirfirco Williams passed on some time yesterday, he was every thing you could ask for in a friend and he was a huge supporter of the Arts. He will be missed dearly.

And now I am sitting here in NM getting ready to start a new chapter in my life trying to figure a way out of everything I have been thought and some how have a epiphany to trust what you don't know. No problem right ? Here it goes .

Summer breeze

I have started the work for the exhibit in Milwaukee and its really pushing me at this point. I see what the work is saying and, for lack of a better word it's exciting.

As an artist when I get these revelations it gets to be an addiction I feel the need to be in the studio every minute even right now as I'm writing my mind is jumping to the canvas. Its great to have this creative energy it feels like that cool summer breeze running all over your body.

Now I need to find funding for the time that it's going to take to develop and create the work, if any one has any ideas please let me know.

Don't forget about all the activity going this weekend, exhibit at the Ogilvie/Pertl Gallery and of course the "one night stand" fund raiser for Radio Arte at the NMMA

Hey what are you doing this weekend?

All right besides all the hallmark stuff going on this weekend you know with St. V's day this weekend. Here are a couple of fun things. But before that, let's take the time to realize that we could be appreciating our significant other every day of the year and a life-time if that's where your relationship takes you.

I will have some work at an opening at the Ogilvie/Pertl gallery they have been handling some of my work here in Chicago for a while now and they're very nice people. I have also donated a piece from the "Saints and Sinners" series to the Radio Arte fund raising benefit thats happening this Friday at the National Museum of Mexican Art they are charging $20.00 admittance but its for a good cause they are a youth training initiative, so they do great things for the community.

Okay, on another note, I spoke with my good friend Patric McCoy yesterday and he let me know that everyone's friend Pirfirco is still touch and go at Northwestern hospital and now to top it off Dan Parker has suffered a stroke. I just don't know what to think about all this. I am sure that they are both in the minds of the community they helped build and will continue to have lots and lots of prayers said in there names.

I'm looking outside the studio window and I can't believe the river is still frozen. That goes to show you how bitter cold this winter in Chicago has been, unbelievable. Have fun every one enjoy the weather and lets keep sending Pirfirco and Dan that positive energy.

President Obama to the rescue

Well here we go again politics as usual and all can think of is that saying you know "SNAFU" . It was great hearing the President making some sense last night and I'm really glad that he took the argument straight to the people.

And its back to work in the studio I'm trying to get creative with the financial situation cause I can't really cry about it so I'm doing what I know, finishing the projects I have going and trying to get new work out there. It's like the old Mexican saying "canta no Llora" it's the best we can do.

I am also looking forward to my residency with Carlos Estrada-Vega which is coming up fast. Until then I hope every one in Sunnyvale, New York and Tempe are all having a great time and if you have any questions feel free to contact me.

Not your grannies Grammy's

I first of all have to say that my thoughts (and prayers) have been going out to every ones good friend Pirfirco, since last Thursday when a message was sent out to all about his condition.

And of course this brings me to think about...well to put it simply life and whatever comes next. I could go on forever on this but all I'll say time is the most precious commodity we all have and I hope we all can find the best use of it respectively. Thats all.

Now here's whats happening at the studio last Friday I had a visit by some one who's opinion I highly respect and over all it went really well I was very satisfied that he was honest with me not that it was all flattering but I respect the honesty. I'm not sure why sometimes it takes some on else to make you realize what you all ready know but if thats what it takes thats what it takes.

Three things that made me really happy this weekend

1. Knowing that DP will be taking that workshop .

2. Hearing that Octavio Solis's "Lydia" has been received as the brilliant work it is at Yale repertory.

3. Celebrating C. Keenan 50th Birthday ( lots of fun!)

4. Seeing E.T. (he's like a brother) happy with his girlfriend.

5. Getting all my errands done and hanging with my brothers.

Yeah I know that's five but I'm an artist and the math thing, well not so relevant on this blog.

anyways have a happy Monday every one! Oh and despite the title I have nothing to say about the "Grammy's"

Well here we go I'm back in the studio working on my mural for the elementary school and listening to Amy Goodman and let me ask where is all the good news? I thought we're supposed to be in an era of "change" you know cooperation, all I'm hearing is the same thing. Its not that the people we elected aren't trying but it seems the other side is just is throwing every thing in the way. I mean really lets look at we're some of those guys get there money and what they do with it.

Thats it for that now back to what going on in the studio. I am starting a new series for my solo exhibit in Milwaukee and its off to a good start lots of material to work on but most of it is going to be concerning current events and how they came about.

So now its back to painting and getting a haircut and all the rest of the stuff that goes on around here. and hope for change better yet lets make change!

FOOD FOR THOUGHT OR THOUGHT FOR FOOD?

Well besides eating very well on our recent adventure to Mexico (I swear every ten feet there is a vendor selling something thats incredibly delicious) as we went to eat at VIPS. So of the course the dilemma is how much can you pass by with out finally breaking down at the elote stand. I actually did very well I only ate a few these street delicacies along with the usual meals.

And of course the food for thought with all the incredible sights and history of Mexico it always puts me in a mediative mood and I seem to absorb an enormous amount of energy when I see so many different cultures wrapped into one big ball of ... well if your not familiar with the culture its seems like its chaos almost in a state of panic sealed with a smile. All the vendors- where are the buyers? But the vendors all have the same demeanor as if to say even if you don't buy from me I still win because look around you I get to live here and you well you'll go back to where ever your from and all your going to have is the memory of visiting this place.

Yeah thats the the way it is, here I am again back in the cold, gray emptiness that is our great city. And all that meditation all the images of raices, templos and the chaos well that will live
on in mind and of course in the work I will produce.

Wow ! I hope every had a great 2008 and I wish all a very productive 2009. Now with that said let me tell you our trip to Mexico this year was very eventful the kids are growing to be very beautiful upstanding citizens and the climb up the tepoztlan was very challenging and meditative.

That was the great part and here is the incredible part at the very point of me thinking that it was about time that we just moved to Mexico and away from the absurdity we call the "american" way of life there was an announcement from the captain of the plane saying there was smoke in the cabin of the plane and that we are turning back to make an emergency landing and that of course all will be fine. I don't know about every one else but when you are in an airplane and you see smoke all around you then you feel the sharp left hand turn my mind did not go to "every thing will be fine"a lot of other things went through my mind at that point of which I will elaborate at a later time.

So that was the situation and now I am sitting at my computer giving you all grief about American Airline Flight 1110 from Mexico city to Dallas and thats the end of that now I will go about creating all the possibilities that I thought about when I heard that announcement. Much more to come about our great trip but know its off to the studio.

Talk about frustration

I suppose it must be frustrating being the governor of one the largest economic states in this country you know all that money flowing in and out and you only making around $100,000.00
give or take a million from the campaign trail.

How did these people in charge get so out of touch with the every day reality of the working class or as they like to refer to theme as "lackeys". I know that there needs to be a structure in this society but I really think that the leaders need to be accountable for there actions. I recently heard Senator Dick Durbin speaking about how he feels that George Ryan should have his sentence commuted what message will that send to our sitting governor as he goes through this stage of his career does that mean that he's going to have his sentence commuted as well?

Now on to my frustration dealing with how I'm going to fund my very own "micro-economy".
I am getting all those projects that are the table finishes that means portraits framing and all the other stuff in the studio are in play so if any ones out there that willing to make contribution to my campaign fund now is the time these thing are f%@^*! golden and I'm not going to give them away for F%@^*! nothing.

Well there you have it another Illinois governor goes down and every one is surprised or are they? Ok well thats enough of that I just can't wait until the day they take the "SHRUBS" away in handcuffs and dickless Cheney too.

Its been very slow going at the studio I'm still kind of reeling from the CPD project but moving on from that trying to field more calls for exhibits and getting better grant writing to apply for more grant funds. I did get a good lead from a friend about this great program that I can run workshops through and not only get paid for it but have the kids participating paid as well so I'll be applying for that some time soon.

Thats it I'll get back to writing soon I'm off to the studio

Okay so just when you I think I have every thing in order I get hit with " sorry your not in our cards here have you voted here before" how do I respond to that I mean I've only voted there off and on since I was 18 and everyone knows me there and yet we all look at each other and shrug.

The solution "step over to the table over there" yes thats right the table over there they have no idea how this happened but it'll all be straightened out with a provisional ballot.

A voice goes off in my head - Never ever accept a provisional ballot yes thats right it was my "Tio" Casimiro talking to me. As a young man Casimiro instructed me on the art of voting (in the 9th ward) the first thing you do is look the person behind the table in the eye and you tell them your name as they are looking for you in the list they're sure to make suggestions to you about the vote your about to make don't listen just shrug it off as a joke and if by any chance they can't find your name in the registration rolls and try to give you a provisional ballot tell them why don't you just throw it in the garbage and save me the time.

Yes these things do happen and my issue was easily solved with an actual ballot but imagine all across this country how many people may be going through this situation imagine that all people will probably have there votes thrown away. Even with all this we have to remember its our right and responsibility to vote its not a luxury or a hassle if the people of Iraq stood in lines for hours to cast there votes in clear vision of people who would later menace them then it should be no hassle to get out there and wait 15 minutes to throw in your vote.

Not to mention that this will be a historic day and how exciting has all this been but tomorrow the work begins so lets all be prepared because it will take all our efforts to undo whats happened the last eight years.

Enough of the lecturing I'm off to paint I've been at this cafe for at least an hour and now it's time to get to work lots more to follow as soon as AT&T gets there act together with our DSL.

What an incredible two weeks

It started last week with the great opening at the HPAC and after an exhausting week of preparation it continued into this week end for the Bridgeport Art Walk.

I wish Artist were treated as well as we all were at the opening for the "Not Just Another Pretty Face" opening it was unbelievable I really want to thank Patric McCoy for commissioning me for this great exhibit and of course every one at the HPAC for putting on this show.

The Bridgeport Art Walk was a continuation of all that great energy. It was great to hear some one say that they felt great positive energy at the opening reception.

I want to thank D. P. for all her hard work I also would like to thank Jspar and Manu for really being there to help put the studio together as well as Joey J and Fernski.

With all that being said goodnight and I hope to see all of you again.

Well okay some times I admit I do over spend at the art store and I have tendency to eat (some times healthy) but I'm not irresponsible I just have an addiction to making art.

This said, I am announcing that congress has decided not to bail me out of any financial stress I may be experiencing (to my surprise!) Instead the government has opted to give the bankers of this country a hand and send them on some fabulous spa retreats where they will receive some much needed facials(no pun intended).

But as I understand the DOD has been taking some interest in my work and perhaps they will add some of my paintings to there brilliant collection lets see how that turns out.

On a more serious note I have been hard at work at some of my projects. I have made it to 88 paintings for the studio reception and the piece for the Milwaukee Show is going very well. And now that we have been connected upstairs I plan to be more consistent with the blog and all other postings.

Today was a very interesting day I got up a bit later 9'ish and attended a luncheon at the Union league of Chicago. There was a very good panel discussion concerning the fostering of community of Chicago based artists moderated by James Yood who has been an the art scene and writing about it for years. The Artist Vera Clement made some very valid points about the churning out of artist from art schools such as the art institute of Chicago and how is the world going to absorb these new artists. I guess that statement could be read many different ways but I know one thing these new Artists better be prepared to face a challenge and I do hope that the new generations of Artist find success. I have to say I was very surprised to see some artists get up and leave during this discussion maybe they had better things to do (or somewhere else to promote themselves).

Anyway for now here are the things I look forward to in the next couple of weeks. Cleaning up the studio, going to a panel discussion on "The Collector" which my good friend Patric McCoy will be participating in, finishing "the" presentation, finishing number 100, Hyde Park Art Center Exhibit, and of course "party time" at the studio! (don't forget Artists need bailouts too)

This is just to important to talk around but I am just amazed at how my fellow citizens can ignore reality and buy into all the hype. Is it that we are afraid of the "boogey man" or is it the other thing you know the thing we will not discuss because its not "PC".

Well thats it if we can't see past all the crap its a sad day to call yourself an American, I mean are we safer with Russian bombers stationed in Venezuela? Is are hard earned money working for us when banks are collapsing? Are we better off with a weaker dollar? and of course all the CEO's are making off with huge pay days so at least we can rest assured that even though Mr. McCain can't remember how many houses he has at least he can relate with that upper 2% that so badly need those tax breaks that the other 98% will never see.

Oh fuck it, where did I get the idea that we are all supposed to be equal in this country. Maybe I should just lower my ideal by all means why should we the people of this country stand in the way of these "great Americans".

Thats it, now I will get back to work after all I still have my dream and its only going to as well as I make it go.

I hope that some you have been able to go over to SCC to take a look at the exhibit that I have hanging. I have been invited to participate in a great exhibit in Carbondale, IL so more and more the work I am doing is being accepted so that feels great I know theres a whole lot of work still to be done but never the less its always gives you a boost to be included.

Well here we are summer is gone (once again) and the time has come to start the shame less promotion. The summer has been really good to me it has presented a lot of opportunity I have been very fortunate to be included in some great exhibits as well as receiving some important commissions. With all that said the beat goes on and there's a ton of work to be done I am continuing the 150 paintings for the open studio reception and I'm working on a proposal for an important commission, so here we go.

Some of the things I have accomplished this summer, mural for "Barrington" nursery, exhibit at OP Gallery for Latin American Art Fair (21 pieces), exhibit at Loyola University "Immigration Through Art " (3 pieces) and of course designing and producing a 11' X 32' mural at a CPS. Thats just a few things I did this past summer.

Trying to Understand the ego

Why is it that people don't understand that there is enough for all of us, why do we insist on being so selfish that we grab as much as possible and try to hold on tight so that none of anything ever gets away... scarcity mentality its a killer disease.

Well thats enough of that, it has been a very eventful two weeks. My mural at Columbia Explorer School is going very well and I just took a great trip with a group of fabulous art collectors
to Atlanta, USA and let me tell you I now know the meaning of "Southern Hospitality" everyone
we met was so welcoming and accepting of not only of me but of the whole group.

I have also been invited to exhibit at the South Suburban Community College in South Holland, IL. (a solo exhibit) That'll be great for exposure. The paintings in the studio are moving along nicely and the portraits are moving forward.

I don't know what else to go on about, at this point there is so much to write about my brain can't focus to let it all out. So enjoy the pic and keep tuning in sooner or later I'll be consistently writing.

Comet Hale-bopp 1995-2008

Comet Hale-Bopp, Born 1995 and lived life as free and careless as a canine could. He passed away on the 29th of June 2008 and is survived by his two humans DLT and Pando.

Comet will be sorely missed by everyone that knew him. The time he spent with his humans was brief but very eventful I could write endless stories of his adventures and endless charisma but I feel that is best left to legend.

So good bye Mr. Hale-bopp, no more will you wiggle away as DLT applies "the claw" on you as you playfully wrestle but perhaps we will meet again.

Well its June and it feels like summer, all I know is that I have a full plate in front of me.

First I am Making good progress on my mural but it feels like it needs about two more months of work.

Second the portraits are getting done and I am very happy with the progress so thats a good thing.

And of course my plans for producing 150 paintings for the October event well for that I am thinking of creating a large piece and cutting it up into 150 pieces, They're going slow.

For the last couple of weeks I have been spending a lot of time doing paper work and there's more of that coming up.

Yes its me again and let me tell you I am appalled at the fact that I have a competitor advertising on my BLOG spot but then I looked at their site and no worries they can'tcompete with my work.

Now that that's been said on to my plans for October the whole concept of 150 for 150 has
been receiving a very interesting reaction. This weekend spoke to a whole bunch of people
about it and the concept of cultivating a whole new group of collectors is very exciting.

I am participating in a group exhibit at the Crown Center Gallery in Loyola university which
opens this Saturday so if anybody would like to join us we will be attending the reception
with Niece who just had the traumatic experience of graduating from the 8th grade.

Wow what a great couple of weeks it has been. I know you all are probably asking yourselves where the hell is DLT? Well now! I just don't know where to start but let me tell thinks are well over here and there only going to get better.

It was sad to see the set I created for "Dreamlandia" go to the wrecking ball but thats life and it was great to see such a fabulous production become reality for all those people that took there time to see the production I thank you.

Well I'm back from a great day out in the field and ready for some more. I don't know what that means but rest assured I'll get to the bottom of it.

Opening night at the R.E.A.C. first annual Latin American Art Fair went very well there was some very interesting people and a few of my pieces sold which is always a good thing! And my project with J.T.O. started today and the piece is started well but the traffic back needs to get better (so all you people out there on the 355 get with it).

New Challenges

Now its on to organizing the May 10 open house and Bridgeport Art Walk which means new challenges for me.

The good news is that I have a great concept for the October Opening. I am challenging those people who say that art is not affordable - I am calling it 150 for 150 thats right I will produce 150 paintings watercolors, oils and mixed media then sell them for $150 dollars each.

So Lets see I have two Murals for Columbia Explorer School a great project for JTO out in Barrington a couple of portraits and 150 painting to get done within a six month period, definitely a fun next couple of months!

And don't forget to stop in to the Ogilivie/Pertl Gallery next week for the first annual Latin American Art Fair which will be happening at the River East Art Center on Illinois Street. I will be participating with the OP Gallery a very fine Gallery.

Well Dreamlandia has landed and lots to tell but little time to write.

For me this work is very relevant and makes the audience
aware of the situation as it is, all though this is a very uncomfortable
thing for a lot of people I do feel it is a start to a dialogue.

The production its self is sharp and very visually enticing (speaking as
the set designer and artist). I think you all have to experience it and come
to your own conclusion then we can take a poll.

My Very Own Niagara Falls

Well here I am blogging for all to read and let me tell you its been quite a great couple of weeks. Let me start with the "DeLaTorre Winter Water Falls".

It was a Wednesday one of the coldest days of the year and I took the day to paint on my mural and other things in the studio, well as I was conversing with my neighbor we both hear water running and start (at a fast pace) making our way to my studio and sure enough there it was, my very own Niagara Falls right on my table with all king of works in progress- as well finished pieces. As I struggled up current to try and save what I could, my neighbor helping as much as she could I had this sudden feeling that I was the luckiest S.O.B. alive if I wasn't in my studio that day all these works and probably much more would have been destroyed as it was there were many casualties but very few fatalities. So there it is I needed some space for it to process but all is well and I am continuing to create.

And for the next episode more adventures with two tonne tow trucks in snowed in alleys. For now please enjoyed a portrait of one my favorite creatures on the planet.

Progress in the studio

I have been hard at work at the studio and its been paying off I have started a new series in between painting on the mural and portraits posted is a picture of one the new pieces. The mural is going well I am planning to have the first level by the middle of the month and its just about there.

I hope every one had a very merry baby Jesus day. I am here trying to remember the very hot and humid summer and thinking of how as mariposa put it was a "long fast year" I met a lot of new friends and accomplished many of my goals.

Here is a pic of the kids from Columbia Explorer Elementary School working on the mural for the school that will be ready in the spring of 2008.

It was a very good time for all of us talk about energy the kids spent six hours at the studio and they left tired I had them busy for the whole day. It was great to hear the principal say that the experience left a impression on the kids.

Well the "holidays" are upon us and isn't great that this is the time of year that people have the inclination to be warm and friendly when the rest of year they're all about themselves. I'm not saying that every one is like that in fact the majority of people I call friends are very open people who are very supportive at all times but for some reason its always this time of year when I get calls from people who have there heads in the sand all year then all of sudden "you must come to my party" and "where have YOU been all year" holy shit man I must have called these people at least twenty times through the year and not returned call. Well happy holidays to all and remember if you see me at some holiday party acting obnoxious its only me being me, oh now I remember why people don't return my calls during the year!

Trying to crunch the numbers

Hey so I am trying to figure out my budget for the next year and of course how to fund the
budget. This is what I came up with if I produce one small painting a day and post it on sites
like this blog and then people can purchase an original painting for as little as one hundred
and fifty dollars that would definitively cover some of the budget so thats part of the plan I'm still
working on the rest.

Well two days of blogging , Its been a crazy week last Sunday I was contemplating our existence then our plumbing goes down nothing like pipes breaking to bring you back to reality.

Getting back to studio was great for me its been a couple of days and I'm fighting a cold but its good to be able to loose myself for a while. I am trying to find ways to get my work out there and I was convinced to start a Myspace page and have set up posts on various websites so I'll see whats working in the next couple of months.

I have been trying to get my work out there for the last few years and its been quite the adventure, The other day I attended a lecture entitled "get out of town".

Wow what a crock of shit there was a panel of four Chicago artist's talking about how they made it. Well their work was very unimpressive I'm a painter my visual sensibilities usually are very open but when you see some of the work thats making it well I really have to question the place we are in as a society.

Any way now that I know that I am taking the steps to get out there I feel much better, whatever that means. So my next step is to find a gallery I feel my work fits in and proceed to get drunk with the gallery owner and set up an exhibit. Thats how works according to the panel discussion.

Veterans day memories of Casimiro Ostrowski

Hello every one I am back to writing and want to introduce everyone to Casimiro Ostrowski or Uncle Casey as everyone knew him. On this veterans day I think its important to remember the people who experienced the brutality of these episodes Casey was one of these people and I say was because he passed away this past week. Let me say first of all the relationship that my brothers and I had with Casey was a very simple one to us he was a father he took us in when we came to this country he really loved my mom and he accepted us as his family.

Saying this is very hard for me for various reasons but that is the reality of the situation. Casey would sit us down and tell us his war stories and how he always felt that no matter how difficult it was you always have to do what you believe is right whether it was going after a platoon of nazi soldiers with a hand full of grenades or follow your aspirations of being an artist.

He was a huge influence on me he instilled his work ethic (he worked as a machinist for 45 years and hardly missed a day) he would always tell me "if you want to become a painter then do what you need to do and paint". Well needless to say he will be missed but I know he will not be forgotten.

Hello every one I am back in Chicago and ready to get back to work in the studio. The exhibits went very Santa Fe was incredible I met a lot of great people I do want to thank the NMOMA and our good friend Betty for their generous support in making it possible and of course I really appreciate Mariposa Atomica for all her help.

The exhibit at Owings-Dewey was very well attended the gallery was alive with creativity I knew the gallery was well known but I wasn't aware how prestigious a place it is well thanks to Kelly Lyon for including me in the exhibit.

I also had a chance to visit a friend in Las Cruces, NM Carlos Estrado-Vega who is an excellent artist and a very centered person. I am probably going to spend some time with him during the winter to push my work to another level so will have a lot on my plate the next couple of years.

The Dia de Los Muertos exhibit for the Latino Arts inc. at the UCC in Milwaukee was even more fun this year Pando joined me and even though we were late to the opening people we knew were there expecting us and it was great to be able to say I am having a solo exhibit at the center.

Well I'm sure I'll have more to write about these experiences later but for now I am going to turn
my attention to "The Amazing Race" so enjoy some pic's.

Well I had a great Wednesday I took a trip to Milwaukee to drop off the piece for the Dia de los Muertos exhibit and had a great meeting with the director she asked if I was ready for a solo exhibit
and of course in my mind I was saying I have been ready for the last two years but hey 2009 sounds great to me.

And I received word from the gallery in Santa Fe my piece has arrived safely and they are very pleased with the work and I am looking forward to see the whole show up in the gallery

In the the mean time we are participating in the Bridgeport Art Walk this coming Saturday from 12:00pm - 6:00pm it will be a fun event so I hope you all can make it.

First of all I would like to thank every one that helped us have a very successful studio event special thanks to Manu and O.S. and of course D.P. also to Nuevo Leon Restaurant for their generous donation of delicious appetizers. I would post pic's from the event but the camera never had a chance to get out of the bag. I can say that even though the weather was sweltering we had a lot of guests and people seemed to be very comfortable hanging out which of course makes me very happy.

And now I am getting ready for Milwaukee and Santa Fe. I am almost done with the piece for
Milwaukee I have changed the content and have dedicated the Altar to the memory of Sgt. Omar
Mora who had the courage to speak out and question the policies of this administration and know he has perished. To me that speaks of the deterioration of the constitution of this country.

I love the heat, I love hot coffee unfortunately the two don't mix and trying to force the issue well not a great idea.
Any way I'm back trying to write out my process I have started the piece for Milwaukee and it is going to be dedicated to Sgt. Omar Mora, I am really effected by his story and the circumstance of his life. When and how do stop this absurdness how do we as a society begin to understand that we are undermining the values that this country was founded on or was it all just talk.

ABSTRACT GLOBAL COMMUNITIES

The exhibit at Neleh Galleries is set and it looks to be a good one I love the theme of the show
and it will be during Chicago Artist month, the building the gallery is housed in is very different as far as galleries go.

I was called by the Chicago department of Tourism to participate at the airport for their artist month program so I will need to go into performance mode for a couple of days. I have a lot of fun with peoples reactions to my work. what happens is that they have you painting in front of a crowd and as the work develops people really get involved with the piece some feel that they need to comment others kind of stand there with a look of ... well I don't really know what to call it. In any event it should be a fun time as always.

This new piece is part of the "virgin" series hope you all like it.

CREATING A "VIRGIN"

Here I am again back from the studio I have been through a sleep deprivation and trying to get work started for the exhibits in Milwaukee and Santa Fe and in the mean time the studio is about 116 degrees and seriously humid but some how I will focus and get the paintings going.

I have this concept for the altar in Milwaukee I am dedicating it to the Constitution of the USA I think its a challenging time right now not only for artist but for every citizen of this country. I want to see how people will approach the situation we are facing will we try to regroup and create a better place or will we continue on the destructive path we are on.

The image posted has it's beginning with the use of imagery to sway people. The common image of "la virgin" the established religion has used it to attract and persuade the masses to follow their institution and all that it stands for. I have been contemplating and creating my interpretations of these icons more on the whimsical level but still affecting me on the subconscious level.

The work in the studio has been going kind of slow but I did manage to get all the material for the portraits finished and lay out the material for the mural . I think this week will be a more tolerable climate.

Back From the Jar

Ok I'm back to writing, I want to thank Dr. V for her comment. I'm happy to have any feed back about the works and projects that I am writing about. The last few days have been very productive in the studio this is the piece I finished today I also finished prepping the surfaces for some commissioned portraits I will be working on in the next couple of weeks that really are going to be fun to do the patrons are giving me "Cart Blanc" on creating the works.

I have to say one thing I would change about my studio has to be the heat WOW! I'm telling you even in the winter there is some solution I could put on an extra layer or even jump around and get warm but in the summer the heat is overwhelming I stand in one place and I wind up drenched in sweat its like being inside a jar and when I am applying gesso it gets very frustrating but enough about that on to the things I am thankful for this week.

One is the great gifts from Diana the pie was great as Comet can attest to and of course the "Power of Art " videos we're all hooked on them. And having my Mom bake me a cake and cooking a great dinner is always a great time.

painting a day

This is the thing, I am trying to do a painting a day at my studio some times I can get this done most of time it is difficult because of my other projects or things that need to get done.

most of the paintings for this project will be small some will be water color and of course others will be in oil the whole propose of this exercise is to be able to associate the images I have dreamnt the night before or the images I bring up during
my sleep deprivation cycle so here it goes and now I'm off to the studio to make gesso.

I don't know if credit is the new slavery system at this point of history but I have to say its a great start to indentured servitude I mean we all know the trap borrow now- pay later but how much will you be paying back and all terms are up to the creditors but enough of my complaints just look at how the subprime creditors have screwed up the home buying market
2 million families have now lost there homes to foreclosures and more than half of those are families of "color" how many of those families who were told that home ownership is the path to wealth and happiness will make it back to a position to buy there next home and how many will be forced to live in a sub par environment were the kids won't be able or want to focus there education and carry on the cycle of poverty but I guess as long as the US army is there to bail those kids out and discipline them, on to the path of good and righteousness we will all be
just fine .

Well I realize that it is a bit preachy so I will leave that alone and talk more about what I am working on at the studio, next time.

Obviously Late To the Blog Party

Eat the hot dogs not the chicken! Said the note my brother left on the fridge door 13-years ago.

For two hours I stopped and pondered if this was a political message. I then realized that there were left overs from the BBQ my brother had gone to.

From then on I thought more about things people say and what's written between the lines.

It's all a matter of perspective and seeing that every person on this planet has a different perspective I have always attempted to see beyond the obvious.
